Celebrating Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Businessman press button. Cyber Security Data Protection Business Technology Privacy concept

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an annual initiative created to help individuals and organizations stay safe online. In honor of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, here are several tips for protecting your data:

Prepare for the Worst

It’s not whether someone will attack your business—it’s when. As the volume and variety of threats increase, you can’t afford to have a cavalier attitude toward security. Be proactive.

Locate Your Information

You can’t protect and manage your information if you don’t know where it resides. Conduct regular inventory audits of all company software and hardware. If you’re sharing data with a third party, make sure they have safeguards and protocols in place to protect your information.

Have a Backup Plan

A strong backup strategy helps safeguard your data from ransomware. Back up your data on a strict schedule and keep backup copies so that if a ransomware attack occurs, you won’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get it back. Whether you back up to the cloud or offline to tape, follow a daily, weekly, and monthly backup routine. And don’t forget to test your backup recovery process often.

Set Up a Firewall

Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, you need to protect your network from hackers and bots. A firewall scans all traffic coming in and out of your network and can block malicious traffic. Although a firewall can’t protect your network from every threat, it can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized system access.

Update Your Devices

Failing to update your devices with the latest software patches makes them vulnerable to malware. Change the settings on your devices to accept automatic security updates. If you have an IT department, check with them on what update and patch policy they may have.

Minimize Human Errors

Employee and vendor negligence often results in corporate data breaches. Have a clear data security policy, conduct regular employee training, and talk to your vendors on how they protect information. Include an “acceptable passwords” policy, phishing detection strategies, incident reporting, and privacy compliance in your training sessions. A culture of awareness is the best defense against cyber threats.

Comply with Breach Reporting Rules

Whether a breach has been found or only suspected, you need to report it. A breach reporting service helps you report the loss of personally identifiable information (PII) to authorities and notify affected individuals. It also gives your organization access to a team of privacy experts who will assess and reduce your liability exposure.
